For our inaugural selection, I'm choosing Trash by Dorothy Allison.
I've read a few of her other books (Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, Cavedweller, Bastard Out of Carolina) and they were all excellent. This month's selection includes 14 short stories, which might be a good way to start our club. Nice and slow. That way, if you only get through one or two stories, you still may have something you want to contribute without feeling any guilt about not completing the entire first assignment.

Good choice. I'm going out to get my copy tomorrow. I read the "bastard" one and really enjoyed.
