First impressions

After you've completed the first few chapters (or if you're totally done already), what are your first impressions?

My impression after the first few chapters is the same as my overall feelings about the book:

    1) I read three of her other novels 8 years ago and I LOVED them. I thought that her writing was very descriptive, her characters seemed comfortable and familiar even though their lives were different from my own. I was a little bummed that I didn't have that same feeling when reading this collection of short stories (except I sort of did get a touch of the same feeling for the characters in the story titled "Compassion").

    2) I was VERY aware of the fact that I selected this book and kept thinking about what each of you were thinking as you read the book. Especially since it turned out to have so much sex in it. Knowing that you would all be reading the same passages made me have the same kind of discomfort I feel when watching a rated R movie with my parents. Every time there was a sex scene, I wanted to skip over the whole thing and go get a snack.

Do you want to just tell me which parts to skip....or do you want me to skip the whole book!!! Now you are going to be psyched out each time you choose a book. I would be happy to allow you this private chat with your friends...Your dear mamamia

Mom, you can read the preface. Just kidding, you should read the whole book.

I got the book yesterday and read a bit before my early bed time. Wow, talk about living a sheltered life in the Midwest, I honestly had no idea that this extreme abuse of children happened. I know this is fiction but don't you think those things happened to her and her cousins? We wouldn't treat an animal like they treat children.
