There were two stories in this book that reminded me of the style of Allison's other books that I really enjoyed. "A Lesbian Appetite" and "Compassion" both had the kinds of descriptions that created imagery that made me feel like I was there. Like the characters were people I knew, like the I could smell the cooking food.

"I dream about picking over beans, soaking them overnight, chopping pork fat, slicing onions, putting it all in a great iron pot to bubble for hour after hour until all the world smells of salt and heat and the sweat that used to pool on my mama's neck." - p. 161

The first part of the description could be from any cookbook, but the last part almost makes you take a deep breath and run up to the kitchen to see if you have any dry pinto beans that need to start soaking.
