Book 7: December 2006
To celebrate the holidays, I've selected a book to help us get into the spirit. Please join me in reading Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris.

I've read several of Sedaris' other books (Naked, Barrel Fever, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Cordoroy and Denim) and there's always something in the book that makes me laugh out loud. I've often read passages aloud to Marty, much to his great entertainment. If you've never read his books but are a listener to NPR's This American Life program, it's very likely that you've heard him read some of his short stories. He's funny, you should read this one. I'm pretty sure it will put you in the holiday spirit. Plus, it's quite short and at this time of year that's a bonus.
I'm going to skip this month's wine pairing and recommend that you pour yourself a glass of whatever suits you at this time of year while you read this book. Take a little time to kick back and read something funny and enjoy some good holiday stories.

I've finished the first two short stories in the book. The first one was pretty funny and the second one was too until almost the very end when it took a turn for the worse. Although I can see the humor in mocking Christmas letters that describe an awful year...this one was too much in the end. Even for me.

Not to influence anyone who hasn't read this, but....boo..hiss. I was expecting some good Holiday humor, most likely sick, but yet funny. Unfortunately, I didn't get it. Maybe I really "didn't get it", because I never even laughed. I have some sick, but humorous, Christmas stories of my that own that beat these. Sorry...this book didn't light my bulbs or ring my Christmas bells. Bah Humbug

Oh no, I hope that I like the rest of it. Otherwise that will make two books I've selected that both have turned out to be BAD choices. I may have to ban myself from book selection duties.

So sorry everyone, but my attempt at choosing a light and funny holiday book could not have been further off. This book was too dark in it's humor, even for me. Dang.

Also, I'm grounding myself from book selection duty for awhile. Seriously, the two worst books I've read this year were the two I chose for our book club.
