Book Club Review: 2006

Looking back on our first year of the Box of Wine Book Club, the books we read this year seemed to fall into three major categories.  They were either "excellent", "pretty good", or "really, really bad".  Unfortunately for me, the two books I selected were the ones I would categorize as "really, really bad".

Excellent
Middlesex: According to everyone's comments and my own thoughts on the book, this one was a hit.  It was a great story that kept us going with foreshadowing and terrific storytelling.  Plus, it was an epic that covered three generations - something that many of us loved.

Pretty Good
The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Nighttime, Julie & Julia, What We Keep, The Kid Turned Out Fine:  All of these books were good and received favorable overall ratings.  I don't think anyone LOVED them, although we might pass them along to someone else to read.  Good, but not something that you keep thinking about all day long as you wait to get back to the book.

Really, Really Bad
Trash, Holidays On Ice: I'm embarassed to say that I chose both of these books.  Banking on these selections as safe since I've read and enjoyed other books by these authors, I was proven wrong with our inaugural selection and the "light holiday reading" idea.  If this can be done in a book club, I'm giving myself detention.
