Book 14: Final Review

July is coming to an end, and it's time to give Uglies your final rating.  Did you read this one?  Did you like it?  What point do you think the author was trying to make to young girls and do you think he was effective?  Compare this book to books you read when you were a young teenager - how would you say that literature aimed at this audience has changed (or remained the same)?

***** = This was one of the best books I've ever read.
**** = It was a great book, I'd definitely recommend it.
*** = It was pretty good.
** = There were some parts that were OK, but overall not great.
* = Not great.  At all.
0 = Didn't quite get around to this one.

Keeping the audience in mind, I would rate this book 3 stars. I think that young teens would enjoy the futuristic exploits as well as the indirect references to things today. I remember that finding books in the young adult genre was always hard because the subject matter was sometimes OK, but the language was horrible. This one is quite appropriate in both areas. (don't let your young teen hear that review...they will no longer be interested in reading it!) As I was reading, I thought of Dr. Seuss's book with the sneeches with stars on their bellies. Some of the same lessons?

I agree with my mom, I thought this was a pretty good book. The trips and adventures outside of the city were the most interesting to me, I found myself getting a bit bored with the topic of "being pretty"... which was maybe part of the point. When I picked up the book, I was surprised by how long it was. Maybe this is part of the appeal to girls reading it - maybe it feels like a real undertaking, much in the same way that I think the heftiness of Harry Potter books appeals to kids, making them feel grown up for reading such a long book. I don't think I'll pick up the two books that follow this one - at least until one of my kids does.
