Book 23: April 2008
Our book club has been around almost a year now, and we're steadily making our way through our list of members to make book selections. This month, I turned to Peggy - one of the four moms in our mother/daughter member combos. I met Peggy when her daughter Amy and I became friends when we were little - maybe preschool or Kindergarten? Anyway, that means that I've known Peggy for about 30 YEARS. And when she says "let's read this book" I just say "sounds good".
Please join Peggy and me in reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs.

When Peggy suggested this book, it appealed to me because a) The cover is pretty and I keep noticing it all over the place; b) I always enjoy a book where lady friends bond; c) I don't know how to knit but I've always wanted to; d) the idea of something to do on Friday nights sounds pretty good to me, you know?
The book's main character, Georgia Walker, is busy running a yarn shop in Manhattan and raising her 12 year-old daughter. Georgia is supported by the staff at her shop and the knitting club that meets at her store every Friday night. Each character has their own histories, dramas, and connections. Two parts of the book's description that particularly appealed to me:
"[the story is] largely occupied by munching on baked goods, sipping coffee and watching the knitters size each other up"
- and -
"Club member's troubles don't intersect so much as build on common themes of domestic woes and betrayal."
Reviews from someone we don't know:
"When I picked up this book, I thought it was going to be one of those happy, lovey, chick lit type books. But it's so much more than that. I grew to love the characters, they became a part of my life. I'm truly going to miss them!" - Jenn
For this month's pairing Peggy recommended a drink called the Foc-a-Rita, telling me that by Friday night, we could all use a little focus. And what better to help you focus than Tequila.
Peggy's Foc-a-rita:
- 2 parts Nutrisoda Focus
- 1 part margarita mix
- 1/2 part tequila
- 1/2 part triple sec
- garnish with lemon
I've had a hard time finding Focus (no pun intended) around here, so when I make this, I'm just going to substitute more Tequila for the Focus. Kidding.

This book looks good! I might have to read it, and -- I dunno -- actually PARTICIPATE in the discussion since knitting is in the title. I still haven't finished A Passage to India, though I did finish The Yiddish Policeman's Union and would recommend it.

Jennie. Oh Jennie. You should find that Focus stuff NOW. Based on the most cursory review of your sidebar, June 2006 is not really "almost a year". To the rest of us, that is almost TWO. Plus I have the bookmark to prove it.

I have had some of Peg's fabulous drink concoctions before, so I trust that this one is great also. Oh...and I guess I trust that her book selection will be good also, so it is on my library list now!
